Palestinian Chief Justice Farid al-Jallad in Rome to Agree Cooperation with Italian High Judicial Council

Ramallah, December 2011 - Palestinian Chief Justice Farid al-Jallad, together with Judge Izzat A. M. Mousa, Head of the Palestinian High Judicial Council (HJC) Court Administration Department, and Judge Fathi Abu Srour, Head of the Palestinian HJC Inspectorate Department, participated in an official visit to the Italian High Judicial Council and Court of Cassation.

The main objective of the visit, facilitated by EUPOL COPPS and supported by the Italian HJC and European Union, was for the High Judicial Councils of Italy and Palestine to enter into a memorandum of understanding to increase cooperation on a range of legal matters.

The Palestinian delegation met the heads of the International Relationship and Evaluation and Training Departments and the vice President of Italian HJC Michele Vietti, as well as the Head of the Court of Cassation Ernesto Lupo.

The main topics examined were HJC working procedures; the internal relationship between the HJC and judges, with a special focus on the relationship of the HJC with the other justice authorities; and the system of recruitment, career advancement and discipline of Italian magistrates, compared to the Palestinian system.

The possibility of regular participation of Palestinian judges in the international continuous education courses organized by the Italian HJC was also raised, as a first step towards larger cooperation.

Justice Farid Jallad and Mr Michele Vietti agreed on the importance of an exchange of information and experiences, which could benefit both judicial institutions, with the aim of achieving international common standards on justice.
