Ramallah, July 17, 2012 - A delegation from the subcommittee on Security and Defence (SEDE) of the European Parliament met with EUPOL COPPS and EU BAM Rafah representatives in Ramallah.
EUPOL COPPS’ newly appointed Head of Mission, Kenneth DEANE, together with EU BAM Rafah’s Head of Mission, Davide PALMIGIANI, briefed this delegation on the missions’ mandates, daily activities, challenges and future, and also on the broader European Union’s support to the Palestinian Security Sector and Justice Sector Reform.
The Delegation was led by the chairman of the SEDE Arnaud DANJEAN (France, Group of the European People's Party). Among others participants were: Ioan Mircea Paşcu (Romania, Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats), Michael Gahler (Germany, Group of the European People's Party), Andrey Kovatchev (Bulgaria, Group of the European People's Party), Krzysztof LISEK (Poland, Group of the European People's Party), Maria Eleni Koppa (Greece, Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats), Geoffrey VAN ORDEN (UK, European Conservatives and Reformists Group).
The EP delegation also paid a visit to the Palestine College for Police Sciences in Jericho which has been recently inaugurated. The college aims at providing cadets and officers from the Palestinian Civil Police (PCP) with the highest level of police training in accordance with international and Human Rights standards. Police training advisors from EUPOL COPPS are present at the College on a daily basis to mentor and advise the PCP staff at operational level.
The Subcommittee on Security and Defence (SEDE) was created in 2004 to assist the Committee on Foreign affairs (AFET) and to provide scrutiny over the Common Security and Defence policy (CSDP) of the European Union.
