Ramallah, 23 June 2103 - EUPOL COPPS organized a workshop on ‘Seized and Confiscated Items, Assets and Proceeds of Crime’ for 12 people from key Palestinian criminal justice institutions.
Senior officials from the Ministry of Justice , the Office of the Attorney General, the High Judicial Council and the Palestinian Civil Police attended the workshop which was held in a Ramallah hotel. EUPOL COPPS legal advisors gave an overview of the current Palestinian legal framework on the topic as well as an overview of the situation on the ground. The participants received a comprehensive presentation by the Director of the Belgian Central Office for Seizure and Confiscation.
The expert explained to the participants the Belgian legal framework and the operational aspects of the cooperation between their Office, the prosecution offices and the Belgian police services.
The Participants examined the possibility of having a new legislation and working practices similar to those in Belgium. It was agreed that a technical team composed of representatives of the different judicial stakeholders , assisted by EUPOLCOPPS, should be installed to study the Belgian model and to apply the parts that accommodate the Palestinian needs.
Sofie Mortier, Deputy Head of EUPOL COPPS, attended the workshop, which was chaired by the Head of Rule of Law section, Theo Jacobs.
