Palestinian Penal Code Drafting Committee makes trip to UK

Ramallah, 8 September 2011 A delegation of senior officials from the Palestinian Ministry of Justice and the Palestinian National Committee on the Penal Code have returned from a study-trip to London, which was facilitated by EUPOL COPPS’ Ministry of Justice team.
 
The trip was organized in cooperation with the UK Ministry of Justice (which funded the visit) and the British Consulate General in Jerusalem.
 
The Palestinian delegation comprised the Deputy Minister of Justice, Mr. Khalil Al RIFA’I (in his capacity as Head of the National Committee); Chief Prosecutor and Secretary General of the National Committee, Dr. Ahmed BARAK; and legal adviser to the Palestinian Justice Ministry, Ms. Fatima Da’na NAZAL.
 

Workshops on the theme of “Making provision for community based penalties in the new Palestinian Penal Code” were organized for the delegation, which should assist the National Committee in further developing the new draft Palestinian penal code.  Presentations were given by UK Ministry of Justice criminal justice experts, as well as representatives from the Sentencing Council and the Youth Justice Board.

Meetings were also held with UK Government Ministers and officials to discuss experiences and future support for the Palestinian Authority in the field of justice. The visit focused on the UK experiences in legislative development and reform, penal policy, and community-based sentencing. Among them, they met the Deputy President and Vice Chair of the Law Society and Bar Council and visited a probation unit in Balham (London).
