Italy, 27th May 2013 - The Palestinian Bar Association (PBA) signed a letter of Intent with the International Institute of Higher Studies in Criminal Sciences (ISISC) of Siracusa, Italy, to establish future cooperation on training projects in several topics of criminal justice.
Based on the Letter of Intent, the future cooperation between the ISISC and the PBA shall relate to training on several areas including: capacity building mechanisms for the Palestinian Bar as an actor in the justice sector; international and regional human rights standards and criminal justice matters; defence rights in complex and high profile cases also with respect to economic and corruption crimes; and access to justice and legal assistance best practices.
The meetings between the ISISC President, Prof. M. Cherif Bassiouni, the ISISC Acting Scientific Director Filippo Musca, and the PBA Representatives were facilitated by EUPOL COPPS, which will act as technical assistance facilitator and/or coordinator as appropriate in terms of the planning and implementation of the training projects.
For the past 40 years, the ISISC has been amongst the leading international law training institutes organizing more than 480 conferences and training courses for about 40,000 participants from 160 countries. The ISISC is a consultative body to the United Nations and the Council of Europe, and is a member of the United Nations Crime and Justice Information Network.
