Ramallah, 2nd July 2013 – The Deputy Secretary General of the EU's European External Action Service (EEAS), Ms Helga SCHMID, visited EUPOL COPPS’ headquarters on Tuesday. During her visit, Ms SCHMID met EUPOL COPPS’ Head of Mission, Kenneth DEANE, International and National staff of the Mission as well as with EUBAM RAFAH’s representatives.
Acknowledging the achievements of EUPOL COPPS in front of all Mission’s staff, Ms SCHMID said that EUPOL COPPS represents “one Flagship” among the other Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) Missions. “It is a privilege for me to be here, and I would like to pay tribute to the Mission for its significant performance in terms of contributing to building Palestinian institutional capacity”, she added.
EUPOL COPPS’ Head of Mission, Kenneth DEANE thanked the Deputy Secretary General for her full support and indeed that of the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security and expressed his gratitude to the Mission’s staff. “We share a common goal of simply making things better for the Palestinian people, not only for now but for generations to come, by helping them to develop credible, professional, fair and equitable criminal justice institutions that not only respect human rights and justice by word but also by deed”, he said.
On the same day, Ms Schmid met with Palestinian Chief of Police, Major General Hazem ATTALLAH at the compound of the Protection and Guarding Units (PGUs), located in Al- Tireh (Ramallah). The meeting was attended by Mr. DEANE and also by the EU Representative John Gatt-Rutter. After the meeting, participants attended a selection of exercises and drills performed by the Special Police Force.
