June 16 - EUPOL COPPS sponsored a two day training event provided by the International Association of Lawyers (UIA) on 15-16 June and by the Bar Association of Florence, Italy (FBA) on 22-23 June. The training events were part of EUPOL COPPS’s provision of technical assistance aimed at supporting the Palestinian Bar Association (PBA) Council and Secretariat on bar association management and organization in line with best European and international practices.
The UIA training was delivered by three senior lawyers from Italy, Germany, and the USA including the Director of the UIA Training and Legal Education Programme. The FBA training was delivered by the President, the Secretary Council member and the Director of the Secretariat of the FBA.
The UIA training focused on a comparative analysis of best practices from the US, Italian and German models of continuous legal education. The participants discussed both how to enhance training practices and procedures for trainee lawyers, along with how to standardize a harmonious and effective continuous legal education programme.
The FBA training focused on three main areas: the role and responsibilities of the President and the Council members (including the empowerment of bar committees and the relationship between the judiciary and the legal profession), internal regulations of the bar (including the structuring of personnel duties and responsibilities and legal aid) and the organization of the Secretariat of the bar (including personnel management and the use of IT to maximize efficiency).
