Florence, Between 29 October and 2 November 2014, a delegation led by the President of the Palestinian Bar Association (PBA) accompanied by members of EUPOL COPPS’s Rule of Law Section participated in the 58th World Congress of the International Association of Lawyers (UIA), held in Florence, Italy. Participation was organized and financed by EUPOL COPPS, which has been facilitating relations between the PBA and UIA. The UIA Congress gathered more than 1000 lawyers representing about 70 Countries, including several Middle Eastern countries.
During the three day conference, the delegation attended sessions on the protection of lawyers’ human rights (presided by the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Independence of Judges and Lawyers); international criminal defense; international negotiation skills for lawyers. Additionally, the President of the PBA participated in the international bar leaders’ senate.
The visit greatly enhanced the capacities of the PBA in the areas of international networking and cooperation with other Bar Associations and lawyers, along with opening up the possibility of EUPOL COPPS facilitating training support by the Training Department of the UIA.
The visit formed part of EUPOL COPPS’s efforts to strengthen the international peer-to-peer relation capacities of the PBA.
