Brussels, December 11, 2014 - EUPOL COPPS Mission organised a week-long study trip for members of Palestinian Civil Police and prosecutors to Brussels, Belgium, to enhance their capabilities to effectively investigate and prosecute serious crimes.
The core aim of the visit which was concluded on Thursday, was to expose members of the Palestinian Police and Public Prosecution to how the Belgian authorities deals in practice with seized items, and learn about the Belgian legal framework for seizure and confiscation.
The six participants – three senior police officers and three leading prosecutors -- visited a number of institutions/organizations including, the Central Office for Seizure and Confiscation of Belgium, the Judicial Police Department, the National Institute for Criminology and Criminologists, the Belgian Federal Prosecutor and the Brussels District Court.
During the visit, the delegation were also welcomed by the EU’s Civilian Operations Commander, Mr. Kenneth Deane- who heads all 10 of the EU’s Common Security and Defence Policy Missions (including EUPOL COPPS), and was the former EUPOL COPPS Head of Mission.
The study visit is part of EUPOL COPPS’s provision of assistance to the Palestinian police and prosecutorial services aimed at enhancing their capacities to efficiently investigate and prosecute serious crimes.
