EUPOL COPPS facilitates workshop on Fair Trial

Jericho - 23rd April 2015 - EUPOL COPPS facilitated two roundtable events on Fair Trial for members of the Judiciary, Judges and Prosecutors, the Police Service, Lawyers and Civil Servants working in the Ministry of Interior as well as Non-Governmental Organisations representatives. The two events were held for two days to include the views of practitioners from the Districts in deliberations to further development a comprehensive set of recommendations in order to come to the full realization of the right to a fair trial in the Palestinian Justice Sector.

The participants were presented the international fair trial standards and received a briefing from their respective institutions on their common vision and commitment to arrive at a joint strategic document and action plan for implementation, carried by all institutions and actors in the sector. Animated discussion ensued on some particular fair trial guarantees after which the roundtables successfully concluded with the adoption of district level recommendations. These latter will be further assessed and incorporated by the members of a multi-institutional Fair Trial Working Group to become part of the final document.

The two events, covering the Northern and Central districts, were part of a sequel of 4 events which will continue in May in the Southern districts and on the National level."
