EUPOL COPPS organises civil society consultation meeting on Fair Trial

On 05 June 2016, EUPOL COPPS, in collaboration with the High Judicial Council, the Ministry of Justice, the Attorney General Office, the Palestinian Civil Police, and the Palestinian Bar Association, organised a Civil Society Consultation Meeting in Ramallah on existing ‘fair trial’ gaps in domestic legislation and judicial practice. The event was organized as an integral part of the wider approach in full realization of the right to a fair trial in Palestine.

EUPOL COPPS, over the last 2 years, has engaged in a working group on Fair Trial consisting of the relevant Justice Sector Institutions to jointly develop recommendations with the goal to foster chance both in legislation and in practice. Throughout this time, the working group has organised internal meetings, focus group consultations, workshops, district roundtables, and conferences. The meeting on Sunday was an essential step on the road to a final joint document with recommendations.  The participants this Sunday consisted of academic scholars and practitioners from NGOs, who all showed a big interest in the topic and provided useful comments regarding perceived priorities and concerns.

In follow up, a draft of the joint recommendations will be finalized and shared with the participants for comments, after which a final document will be consolidated and presented to the Heads of Institutions and the donor community. The recommendations are meant to form the basis for a comprehensive “fair trial strategy”.
