EUPOL COPPS reaffirms its commitment to fight corruption in Palestine

At a meeting Thursday between the Head of the EU Police and Rule of Law Mission for the Palestinian Territories, Kauko Aaltomaa and Commissioner Rafiq Al-Natsheh, Chairman of the Palestinian Anti-Corruption Commission, the Mission reaffirmed the EU Member States’ resilient support for the fight against corruption in Palestine as an essential effort in building a viable state.

The Head of Mission praised the substantial progress made in implementing the Memorandum of Understanding between the Anti-Corruption Commission and the Palestinian Civil Police. The Head of Mission reiterated the Mission´s continuous support to the well-functioning working group, which is responsible for the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding.

The Commissioner expressed his satisfaction with the cooperation between the Mission and the Commission. He outlined recent activities, including workshops in the West Bank, which have improved the understanding within the Palestinian Civil Police of the Anti-Corruption Law and the role of the Police under the Law. Furthermore, the Commissioner promoted the speedy implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding.

The Head of Mission was accompanied by the Head of the Rule of Law Section, Giovanni Galzignato and used the meeting to introduce the new Deputy Head of Mission and Chief of Staff, Dr. Katja Dominik and the Mission’s new Prosecution Expert, Andreas Laursen, to the Commissioner.

From the Palestinian Anti-Corruption Commission, Akram al-Khateeb, Deputy Attorney General; Said Shehadeh, Director General of the Office of the Commissioner; and Mazen Lahham, Legal Advisor at the Commission’s Legal Department also participated in the meeting.
